How do I do this whole Daemon thing?

Post  Asheroth on Sun Jan 06, 2013 12:50 am

Let me start by saying that I've read up on the subject of Daemons a bit, but I still can't figure out how you do it. For a long time (years) I've been aware of the other voice in my head; always there, always guiding me, always telling me what I should be doing, berating me when I do something silly, praising me when I do something good. But how do I begin to interact with it? I guess I just need some direction on how to proceed from here.

And what sets apart a Daemon from a multiple's headmate?

Well someone creates a daemon. A daemon is an imaginary friend or mental construct (depending on who you ask). It still is the person it is a part of. Not separate and independent.

The idea of daemons is to have a mental construct which one 'projects' (seeing around them) and talks to. A lot of people who start of creating their daemon goes with using her 'internal dialogue.'

This helped a lot Earth Listener, thank you very much. I guess it's just going to take some time to separate the other dialogue where it doesn't feel odd, like I'm just talking to myself. But, I guess it isn't really that odd. We all carry on conversations with ourselves on a daily basis anyway right?

I know what form it wants. That's been made more than obvious to me for awhile. It's just hard talking back and forth.

This actually explained a lot for me too. Everytime I've heard people talk about daemons it's been in the same context as those in the His Dark Materials trilogy, so I've never been able to take it as a serious thing. But describing it as a constructed projection of the self makes it more believable, and makes more sense in my brain wirings.

Thank you for briefly explaining and providing so many resource links.

I agree with Kai. I've never actually looked into Daemons but having read through some of those links, I actually understand the concept now and can see the usefulness in it. Thank you for posting all of those great resources Chimera. Smile

I've come across this term before but never took the time to look it up. Very informative!

So if I understand this correctly, having a Daemon is essentially like projecting your conscience? Is that right?

Yes basically though that depends on who you ask as some daemians merely see their daemons as being imaginary friends. However others see them as imaginary friends but with some connection to their consciousness or even perhaps sub- or unconsciousness (again depending on who you ask) in some ways. Others still see them as a bit 'more' then imaginary friends and might see them more as mental constructs or even something along the lines more of a thoughtform or tupla which is connected to your mind.

Either way though, yes you could generally say that, having a daemon is like projecting your conscience or even 'that voice in the back your mind that might warn you one minute and egg you on the next' into a form you 'see' for your yourself.
